When I wake up, it’s only for a moment. The car has stopped at a well-lit building. Lucia calls it a gas-station, and I assume we’re here to get fuel. There are a few other cars, and Lucia says it’s not uncommon for people to be out this late. I immediately think about how they must not have curfews outside of Safety. Lucia and Fred clean out most of the vomit from underneath Charlie and then we are moving again.

As we pull away from the gas station, I look up into the sky to see the stars and moon are still shining. I’ve not seen something this beautiful in my whole life. Turning to look at Charlie, I see he’s asleep again. Susan is still in the same position she was when she passed out however long ago.

I see the sky is lighter outside Charlie’s window and I get nervous again.

“Um—” I say, “how much longer until we are there?”

The worry must be obvious in my tone, because Lucia stretches her hand over the front seats to put it on my knee.

“We will be inside long before the sun comes up, Korinne, don’t worry,” she tells me.

I think for a moment how odd it is that I’m letting some unknown woman touch me, but then I realize I have little choice. I figure if she wanted to hurt us, she’d have done so already.

I laugh internally at this because she literally cut our arms open on purpose. Still, I’m not scared of her. Since I met her in Safety, there’s something about her that puts me at ease. That, plus the fact she is also my father’s scientist, and he said to trust her. That’s enough for me.

Thoughts of my father come flooding in and I sit upright.

“My dad! Where is my dad?” I exclaim.

Lucia bites her lip. “I’m sorry, Korinne, we didn’t have time to get him out too,” she says.

Fred whispers something I can’t hear from the driver’s seat, and Lucia nods in acknowledgement.

“We’ll get him back, don’t worry, someday we’ll get him,” Lucia says.

I’m not comforted by her words. Tears are welling in my eyes at the thought of my father dead.

“But he’s going to die, isn’t he?!” I realize I’m almost yelling this as tears stream down my face.

Lucia’s eyebrows shoot up and she shakes her head. Her hand squeezes on my knee, and then she’s speaking.

“He’s not going to die, the Creators have him secured for the time being,” Lucia pauses and rubs her eyebrows with her free hand. “Now is not the time to talk about this, you need rest. Just know he is going to be okay, he’s just in the hands of the Creators.”

Once again, her words aren’t overly comforting, except for the fact that she said he won’t die. What it means for him to be in the hands of the Creators I don’t know, but I try to relax, knowing he won’t die soon.

“Sleep,” Lucia commands me.

This time, now that the adrenaline and the idea of my father dying is past, my body responds to the idea of sleep.
